The Montgrí was already inhabited in the Lower Paleolithic, especially in the caves both in the Cau del Duc and in the Cau de Torroella, having also found several Neolithic burial cavities (around 3,000 BC)
Old History
From this period we have a Phoenician necropolis in Cap Castell, Roman villas near Ullà, an Iberian settlement in Ullastret and a large Greek (and later Roman) village in Empúrias. We recommend you to visit both Ullastret and Empúries (which is near L’Escala).
Medieval History
We have knowledge in the medieval history books of 7 of the 8 municipalities of the Natural Park: Ullà, Torroella de Montgrí, Palau-Sator, Pals, Fontanilles, Bellcaire d'Empordà and Gualta. We recommend a visit to each of these towns, where you can visit castles (Torroella de Montgrí), medieval villages (Pals, Bellcaire d'Empordà or Palau Sator) or wonderful medieval churches such as San Pau de Fontclara, Sant Julià de Boada or Sant Joan de Bellcaire.
Modern History
At this time we have a connection with water (such as the Gualta Bridge or the “Resclosa” of Ullà) or the “Massos” (farmhouses) fortified to prevent piracy that ravaged the Mediterranean. All of them very close to L'Estartit, which can be visited on foot or by bicycle or a connection with the dry stone constructions, which we see along the Montgrí (lime kilns, barracks, walls, etc.). In the photo we show you the "Torre dels Muscats"
Contemporary history
In more modern times the fortification of the Medes Islands (18th-19th century), the Lighthouse of the Medes Islands or the so-called “Americanus” houses were built, which were houses built by people who had made their fortune in America.
